Welcome to the 36th edition UMI’s ACC Basketball Handbook. Once again, we’re pleased to offer the No. 1 preseason guide covering the home of the most competitive and exciting college basketball in the nation, the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Publishing the Handbook has always been a labor of love for us at UMI, but having a partner in Chrysler Jeep as our presenting sponsor makes it that much better. Through its relationship with the ACC, Chrysler Jeep has clearly shown its dedication to the conference, its member schools and corporate affiliates. We feel privileged to be a small part of that, and we’re grateful to Chrysler Jeep and their entire network of dealers for their support.
We’d also like to thank our friends at the Atlantic Coast Conference for their assistance and encouragement in producing the Handbook for ACC fans to enjoy as they prepare for another great season of competition.
Praise goes to our outstanding team of writers and photographers as well. Each is among the best in the field, and as far as we’re concerned, we have the Dream Team of sports journalism right here between the Handbook covers. Our appreciation goes to each and every one.
We’d also like to welcome some great new additions to the Handbook. First, a father-and-son combination offering educated and enlightened previews of the upcoming season. Former Maryland star and NBA champion Adrian Branch joins the Handbook along with son Adrian II, an outstanding scholar and emerging athlete in his own right. Together, they give us their breakdown of each team in the league in “The Branch Review.” Joining the Branches on our newcomer list is no rookie to this game. Dan Bonner’s record of accomplishments is too long to list here (although we tried on page 46), so suffice it to say we’re honored to have his analysis of this year’s National Top 25 and Teams to Watch. Our sincere gratitude goes to Dan, Adrian and Adrian II for their valuable contributions to the Handbook.
Every year is eventful and exciting when it comes to ACC basketball, but as this edition came together, it became clear that the 2008-09 season could easily go down as one of the most electrifying campaigns in recent memory. Just consider that no less than five ACC teams will begin the year ranked among the Top 25 in the nation, a list topped, of course, by the North Carolina Tar Heels. But that’s just for starters. Jump into the pages that follow and discover why this should prove to be an extraordinarily competitive season that is bound to be filled with surprises.
